Atom Bait BoatMade by the same manufacturer as the Waverunner. Angling Technics and Viper have set the standard in recent years, but these two boats from Wayahead present a real challenge, and at a better price. The Atom is similar to the above, but slightly smaller and has a single hopper.

Viper IconThe baby of the Viper range. Viper say their aim when developing an affordable bait boat was to give the same quality as their bigger boats and still use their jet pump system, rather than go for the cheaper option of using propellers. When compared to other boats in this price range, this looks like an outstanding deal.

Angling Technics Procat MK2Angling Technics was founded back in 1992 with the sole purpose of designing & building a specialist bait boat. It shows! The Procat is lighter than the Microcat, but has many of the same features, and definitely the same quality. Single hopper, so can carry 1kg of bait at a squeeze.

TFG PatriotMatt Hayes and his TFG brand have released this bargain bait boat which may be enough for you. They reckon its tough and indestructible (watch the video as they try and sink it!), and it has a weed guard. TFG is known for its value for money, but is the quality there? We’ve read a few negative reviews, so can’t wholeheartedly recommend this boat, but we can’t complain at the price.

- What size waters are you going to be fishing? What kind of range does your boat need? If you're likely to be fishing large lakes, you DO NOT want to send your bait boat out and not be able to get it back - watching a few hundred pounds worth of kit drifting away into the distance on a French lake is not a recipe for happiness... You need a failsafe!
- What kind of water conditons do you fish? Large lakes with adverse weather conditions/waves, or your local carp pond?
- How much bait do you need to deliver? Do you need a high capacity boat or do you mind making a few boat trips?
- Do you need an integral fish finder? Spare battery pack? Lights?
- Prop drive (which usually have weed guards) or jet drive (little to no chance of fouling)?
